DSP ARTICLES

1st Article-
Dubstep Vs Grime today are both a genre of urban music.
Grime
Grime was developt from Uk Garage, Dancehall and Hip-Hop. Todays Grime has become very popular in England mostly London. Grime is starting to become global to America as 'Hello Good Morning' by Skepta ft P.Diddy, the artists made a collaboration together and Skepta is the first UK Grime artist to make a collaboration with a successful American Hip-Hop artist. "To Londoners Grime is our Hip-Hop and to Americans their Hip-Hop is their style of Grime" quoted by Skepta.
Dubstep
Dubstep is originated from London. Dubsteps early roots are experimented with UK Garage producers. Dubstep has elements of Drum and Bass and Garage. The MC's role in Dubstep is to ease up the beat and to make the tune not sound like heavy Drum and Bass. Other part of Dubstep roots are from Jamacian dub music. The DJS which are most successful in London today are Benga, Caspa, Rusko, Plastition, Coki and Skream. Bengas number one single that made number five in the UK chart and stayed at the top 10 for two weeks was 'Man on a Mission' Katy B ft Benga.

2nd Article
Dubstep and Grime have both become Londons most popular type of genre today. Many Grime and Dubstep artists are developing collaborations together and mixing up the music scene. Before Dubstep became commercial, the genre was mainly an underground scene. Dubstep has an overwhelming bassline, and does have occasional voices, and this is where Grime comes in as Grime takes Dubstep to a whole new level and makes Dubstep a whole lot different and appeals to a wider audience. As now Grime is accepted alongside Dubstep, the MC's and DJ's are taking there music to a whole other level.

3rd Article Skepta interview-
Where did you grow up?
In Nigeria, I moved from Lagos when I was three and moved to Tottenham in London.
How did your music career start?
Well I won a MC battle with over 300 MC's that I was competing against, I even won the battle against 'Temper T' who is a sick MC and hes doing it big today, Im looking into doing a collaboration with him.
How did Grime label 'Boy Better Know' start up?
Im the managing director of the label along with my brother Grime artist JME and Wiley. We started the label in late 2005. Wiley left the label as he found a mainstream chart success with 'Roll Deep'.
What singles are your most successful?
'Rescue me' which was my version of  'Grime Vs Dubstep', Bad Boy, and obviously my tune with P.Diddy 'Hello Good Morning' the Grime remix.
How do you like Dubstep?
I think Dubstep is a sick genre as Grime and Dubstep are collaborating together and there mixing up the music scene as I did with 'Rescue Me'.

to do list

- Photos of girl and boy in garage type place my location (hadley wood next to station) take photos when its dark. Few photos of different positions.
- Graphic drawing of artist Skepta for contents page.

<-- This font is what im going to use for the double page spread and contents page for the titles. The reason why I have chosen this font is because the Genre Dubstep is very loud and in your face and this writing stands out as it is bold and set in capital letters.
- COLOUR FOR MASTHEAD - White with red bold line underlining.
- MAIN COLOURS FOR MAG- Black,Red,White
Other publications of Dubstep have fonts which are bold and brightly coloured, I choose my colours too be blunt as my font already stands out enough and I want my magazine too have a standard of high quality and class.

final sketch of DSP

- This is a sketch of my double page spread. This is my main article which is featured in my magazine and I choose Dubstep vs Grime as the main article as is has a mix of genre and artists today are making collaborations with the genres. The colours which i want the title of the DSP to be is white bold writing with 3 bold red straight lines underlining and the background colour is going to be black.

Audience Research for DubstepMag

My audience research showed that the majority of people 16-25 like Dubstep and would pay towards a new magazine, and as now in London a Dubstep magazine would be successful because it is the new British music hype.

Anaylsis of Vibe magazine double page spread

- A double page spread can use 4/3 colomns a page this contents page uses up to 4 colomns.
- Theres snapshots of the singer all above the writing in black and white and to break up the writing theres a larger picture in colour, and this makes the double page spread look more appealing to the reader.
- The first section that the audience read is in capital letters and the singers name is in colour.
- The gutter of the magazine is 0.7 cm wide.

Analysis of Vibe magazine contents page

- Vibe magazine is for audiences who like Hip Hop and Rap. On this contents page there is only one large main picture which is of a rapper and thats what a rap sterotype is. The logo 'Vibe' is on the right and there is a large 'V' at the back of the picture which symbolises vibe magazine. The title contents is placed in a interesting way in which I would have as one of my ideas for my magazine contents page. The magazine has all the different articles listed with sub headings. The date is placed at the bottom of the magazine.

Analysis of Contents pages

Mojo Magazine
Q Magazine
The Source Magazine
The Wire Magazine
1: All of the magazines have their logo printed somewhere on the contents page.

2:  All of the magazines except 'Mojo' have one main picture which is linked to the magazines main article. 'Mojo' magazine has many different pictures and there linked to every different article in the magazine.

3: All of the magazines have sub headings listing the different articles, 'The Wire' magazine is set up in columns and not by subheadings.

4: Listed articles.

5: All of the magazines have the date placed somewhere on the contents page.

6: 'Q' and 'The
Source' magazines both have there websites listed on the contents pages which the others dont have.

The aesthetic of Dubstep

- These images are of Dubstep records covers, the three of the covers have there own style but are all linked in a way that a Dubstep fan would see. The writing of the covers are all bold and make the name 'Dubstep' stand out. The colours they use in the album covers are either black, white, grey and blunt colours.

-  This screen shot comes from a record label website called 'Dubstrict Records' which is specially for Dubstep. The font of the writing is bold and graffiti like, as there is a spray paint effect around the picture. The DJ deck, the sound speakers and the microphones in the photo symbolises Dubstep as the music is loud heavy bass and when you go to a Dubstep rave you see and experience this. The colours of the writing are almost rave like and simple but stand out. The name of the records 'Dubstrict Records' you automatically know the label is linked to 'Dubstep'.

Image Selection 'Shape'

-These images are from 'Shape', this magazine is for woman who want to read about health and how to keep their bodies in shape.
-The top image is a paparazzi shot and has two photos of the same celebrity from before her weight loss and after. The colours are set for woman as pink is a feminine colour. The image underneath is a 'Shape total body toning set' which they can buy straight of the 'Shape' website, the video next to it explains how the toning set works.
-The relationship between the photos and the target audience is that a reader of 'Shape' will be expecting these images as they are looking to get their bodies fit and healthy.

Image Selection 'Closer'

- This image is a paparazzi shot which is not a set up,t he pictures been taken outside their house which will tell the readers that something is happening with these two. The magazine on purposely choose two pictures of both of them smiling, which will indicate that something is going on between both of them as the caption underneath says 'Matt and Katie romping?'.
- The relationship between this image and the magazines audience is that a reader of 'Closer' is expecting these paparazzi images as it indicates gossip and its like the reader knows everything about their lives.

Image Selection 'Vogue'

-This image is of a model who is modelling clothes as the new fashion, the focus on this photo is mainly focused on the model.
-The story being told in this photo is very simple, a girl who is waiting at a train station or bus stop?, but this photo doesn't look modern as todays bus shelters and train station do not look like that. What the image is trying to say is that the vintage look is the new fashion, as her clothes do not look contemporary and her hair looks like a 60's hair style.
-The relationship between the image and the magazines target audience is that someone who buys 'vogue' is expecting these sort of images in the magazine because they are the ones who want to know about the new fashions.

My Genre for my Music Magazine

Having researched different genres of music magazines, I feel i have found a gap in the market. I have not been able to find any magazines aimed at a dubstep audience. My choosen genre for my magazine is Dubstep its a recent genre that has only r ecently coming to radio. I choose this as my genre because there are no other dubstep magazines apart from music magazines which have issued dubstep to introduce the music to people. In my google research I know which magazines Dubstep has been issued in, this link showed which magazines have issued Dubstep, Click To View Dubstep Directory.

____________________________________________________________________________

When I typed in 'Dubstep' on google images I picked up on that if there was a 'Dubstep' magazine the set colors on the front cover would be red, black and white.

Hybrid Music Magazines

Rolling Stone Magazine

These two magazines are both front covers from the 'Rolling Stone', which is one of the worlds most popular magazine. The 'Rolling Stone' is a hybrid magazine, as you can tell from the two frontcovers above. One of the covers has a teenage boy band which the readers who would buy this issue would be teenage girls, where as the cover next to it is of Lil Wayne who is a Hip-hop rapper, the readers who would buy this issue would be girls and boys from ages 15 to 20 year olds, both of the photos have a rock style feel as on one of the covers the artists has tattoos all over his body. Both of the covers have simiular font except the second cover which the font is stretched out, the colors are very original and plain.

NME Magazine

NME Magazine

This magazine has a range of different genres including indie, rock, and electro, mostly the magazine issues new british indie bands. The masthead on the magazine is very simple but bold and the magazine has synergy as the masthead 'NME' people automatically know what magazine it is.The picture on this frontcover stands out and as you can tell the singer looks very indie/electro because of her makeup and hair. The captions around the magazine are telling the readers what will be included in that issue. The title 'The future 50' is telling the readers whats going to come up in the future, this is one of the main issues in the magazine thats why the font is very large and is yellow so it will stand out to the reader.
This front cover was 'NME' back in the 1970s 'NME' used to be called New Musical Express when it was first published in 1952.

Rock Magazine

Kerrang Magazine
The genre of this magazine is Rock and the masthead 'Kerrang' is not only a magazine it is a music channel aswell which plays Rock which most of the public know as 'Kerrang' as being a rock word. The masthead is designed as looking very shattered and cracked as rock music has a very hard and electric beat. The main picture on the magazine is of legendary Duff McKagan who is apart of the band 'Guns N' Roses' which are a well known rock band. At the bottom of the magazine there is a subtitle which says 'Free! autographed metallica poster part three', which would be very eyecatching to a reader who loves rock and would love something autographed by one of their favourite bands.

Hiphop Music Magazine

Vibe Magazine

The front cover of 'vibe' magazine is a hiphop genre. The masthead of the magazine is called 'vibe' as hiphop music itself has a vibe to the songs, as soon as the reader sees the masthead they automatically know that the magazine is about hiphop music, the masthead is in a large bold font which is eyecatching. The small titles around the magazine are explaining small sections of the magazine so the readers know what will be issued in the magazine. The readers of this magazine will notice that some of the hiphop artists which they listen to are featured in the issue. The photo is of one of the most know hiphop rap artists today 'Lil Wayne' which every hiphop fan will love to hear.

Romeo and Juliet opening scene

This opening scene of Romeo and Juliet has an introduction of the two sides, the montague boys who have been costumed as california boys, you can straight away know which family the men are from as one of them has a tattoo of 'Montague' on the back of his head and aswell as their number plate which is shown clearly. The introduction to the major roles are shown through pausing of freeze frame of each character. Theres a subliminal message were the camera switches to one of the signs in the petrol station that says 'Add more fuel to your fire' when you see that you automatically know something bad is going to happen. When the 'Capulet' men come into the scene the music is very western and you can tell they are the violent ones, their clothing are very formal suits and they have religious pictures on their bullet proof vests. The nuns that come out of the petrol station both of the groups tease, once the nuns have left the men are faced with eachother.
